How 2 Sparrows got started

Our Story

 

How It All Began
Looking back, I can see God's hand leading every step of this journey —

even the parts that felt uncertain at the time. After more than 30 years in

accounting, I found myself looking for work when the company I was at got

taken over. Around the same time, I'd started doing some financial work at

my own church, and it got me thinking: maybe church accounting could be

my niche.

As I researched it, though, I ran into a problem — most churches only need

an accountant for around 15 hours a week. Nowhere near enough to pay the

bills on its own. So I started interviewing, hoping to piece together enough

hours across a few churches to make it work.

 

The Question That Started It All
At the very first interview, I got a question I wasn't ready for: would this be

as an employee, or did I intend to make it a business? I didn't know — so I

called a lawyer friend for advice. His answer was immediate:

"Business, absolutely."

That conversation is how 2 Sparrows began.

 

Finding My Design Side
While I built up my church accounting work, I was also still serving at my own church — where the website was, frankly, a mess. After several attempts to find someone who could fix it, I decided to give it a try myself. And I loved it. It was fun, relaxing, and the congregation told me I was good at it. If you can have fun and get paid for something, why wouldn't you pursue it?

From there, one thing kept leading to another. Our church started pulling together teams to put on events — things like the Back to School Bash and the Fall Festival — and somewhere along the way, I became the go-to for flyers, certificates, and the design side of it all. I have a background in computer work and finance, and I suppose an eye for creativity too — but honestly, more of the credit belongs to Him than to me. He led me into things I never would have expected, one need at a time.

Becoming a Family Business
The sticker side started the same way — as a simple service, designing stickers for churches to use at events and as welcome gifts. (T-shirts, hats, cups, and other swag are coming soon too!) Then Chris had an idea for a design, we made it, and not long after, my son started designing at school and wanted his work published too. Suddenly, 2 Sparrows was a family business. I decided everyone should get credit for their own work — and that's how the butterfly, dragon, and dragonfly signature marks came to be. Since everything's faith-based, the stained-glass style just felt right.​

Tools Born from Real Need
The spreadsheets come from the same place — tools I built for my own church finance work, which I've since customized for other church secretaries and treasurers. Every church is a little different, so if spreadsheets aren't your thing, it's worth the extra step to have one built specifically for how your church operates.

One project I'm especially proud of: a church cemetery that had fallen into disorganization after an office fire and years of record-keepers coming and going. I researched every plot using deeds and public records, built family trees for some of the families buried there, and mapped out which plots were occupied and which were still available. That's exactly the kind of challenge I love sinking my teeth into.

 

Why We Do This
None of this happened because I planned it out. It happened because God kept opening doors, one at a time, and I said yes — sometimes in ways I never expected.
